You know, I’ve studied thermodynamics, and there are two Laws in particular that are also very useful in discussing business. Stay with me here… there’s a point to made.
The second law can be paraphrased to state: the entropy (disorganization) of the universe is increasing and perpetual motion machines are impossible. The third law is an extension of the second: You could theoretically halt entropy if you could cool something to absolute zero… unfortunately, also impossible. So, can you take your business to the absolute maximum, perfect operating condition? Well, no - but you should try!
Things grow continually more disorganized because the variables and situations we face each day are infinitely more in number than our time and ability to overcome them. So, what is a fellow supposed to do?
You must have regular maintenance, just like a machine. Not only this, but occasionally you will need an overhaul! The trouble with machines is that they have lots of moving parts, which are generally interdependent upon one another. It’s the same with your business. If you could overhaul your “machine” to eliminate some of those parts, you would reduce the chance of break-down. Unfortunately, business doesn’t slow down. You can’t usually afford to suspend operations, even if you knew how to improve your process. Think of it as needing to change a flat tire on a moving vehicle - even if possible, you’re likely to get your nose bloodied!
